Lord CLARKE of Stone-cum-Ebony

(1943-2026)

The Society was saddened by the death of Lord Clarke on 16 April 2026. He was born Ayr, Scotland 13 April 1943. He was educated at Oakham School and King’s College, University of Cambridge. Called to the Bar at Middle Temple in 1965, he had a commercial and maritime law practice. Queen’s Counsel in 1979, his judicial career began in 1985.

He was Master of the Rolls, 2005 - 2009. As Tony Clarke, Baron Clarke of Ston-cum-Ebony, he became a Justice of the Supreme Court on its first day. He was the first justice to be appointed by it, 1 October 2009.

Anthony, ‘Tony’, Clarke QC was the head of 2 Essex Court Chambers, Middle Temple (subsequently Quadrant Chambers), London. He hosted the first embryonic meetings of the Society.

The early meetings were held in 2 Essex Court from 1988. In 1989 a meeting led to the formal decision to name the society  ‘Association des Juristes Franco-Britanniques - Franco-British Lawyers Society’. It was registered as a company in September 1989. 

We remember the warm welcome by Lord Clarke to meetings, his interest in the Society and support. The Society launched at the Inaugural Annual Colloquium at the cour de cassation, Paris,  September 1990.

Lord Clarke’s interest and support lasted for more than three decades.

In 2017 at Her Excellency’s, the French Ambassador’s Residence, on a special occasion, I had the privilege and honour to thank Lord Clarke on behalf of the Society for all his support, and for giving us a home for meetings to found and launch  the Society. 

The thoughts of the Society, its President, Board and members go out to Lady Clarke and the family at this sad time.

L’Association a été profondément attristée par le décès de Lord Clarke, lundi le 16 avril 2026. Né à Ayr en Ecosse en 1943, il poursuivi ses études à Oakham School et à l’Université de Cambridge, King’s College.

Devenu barrister à Middle Temple en 1965, il était spécialiste de droit commercial et de droit maritime. Nommé Queen’s Counsel en 1979, sa carrière de magistrat a commencé en 1985.

Il a été nommé ‘Master of the Rolls’ (2005-2009). Tony Clarke, Baron Clarke of Ston-cum-Ebony, est devenu "Justice of the Supreme Court", au premier jour de sa création. Il a été le premier ‘justice ‘ nomme par la nouvelle Cour Supreme du Royaume Uni’, le 1er octobre 2009.

C'est ainsi qu'il a accueilli les premières réunions de l’association de 1988. En 1989 a une réunion les membres ont voté le nom de l’association comme: l’ ‘Association des Juristes Franco-Britanniques - Franco-British Lawyers Society’. L’Association a alors été inscrite comme société au registre de commerce en Angleterre en  septembre 1989. 

Nous nous souvenons des chaleureux accueils de Tony Clarke QC lors de nos premières réunions et son soutien a l’association continuera après le Colloque Annuel Inaugural de l’association à la Cour de cassation septembre 1990.

Le soutient de Lord Clarke a continué pour plus de trois décennies.

En 2017 à la Résidence de SE l’Ambassadrice de France au Royaume Uni, j’ai eu l’honneur et le privilège de remercier Lord Clarke de la part de l’association pour tout ce qu’il a fait pour nous et d’avoir fourni le berceau pour former l’association.

C’est à Lady Clarke et toute la famille que l’association, la Présidente et les membres envoient leurs condoléances. dans nos pensées en ce moment.
