A Stitch through Time with the Bayeux Tapestry
The Franco-British Lawyers Society (FBLS) in partnership with the French Embassy is holding a major full-day conference discussing the Bayeux Tapestry and the Rule of Law on Friday 27th November 2026 at the French Ambassador’s Résidence, 11 Kensington Palace Gardens, London W8 4QP.
The Bayeux Tapestry is the catalyst for the conference. The morning sessions will look at the history, meaning and significance of the work, its educational and political purposes, and its place in art.
The afternoon sessions will first consider Norman law and its influence on English law, as well as the customary law of Guernsey. Then, a panel of experts from France and the UK will discuss the development of the rule of law in the UK and France from the Conquest to modern times.
Renowned speakers from France and the UK will take part in the conference, including the British Museum’s curator of the Bayeux Tapestry, eminent historians, and legal experts including from the judiciary.
The conference is an exceptional opportunity to discuss and understand an object significant to the history of both the UK and France, as well as to study the development of the rule of law and its all-important rôle and significance in society today.
We welcome you to register now your interest in attending this special conference. Invitations to attend the conference will then be sent by the French Embassy to successful applicants. There is no charge for attendance.
Please do not delay in registering as places are restricted and demand is expected to be high.
